This beautyfull situatet zoo is known for its Persian fallow deer (This species survives only becourse of this zoo) and the African elephant (the worlds 2nd calf was born here of any zoo). Of other rarely showen animals there are among others the wallaroo, mountain reedbuck and brown hyena

Children will love to feet some of the animals (only with food bought at the zoo), pet goats or ride camels and ponys. The zoo also has a large playground

  • 1955: Opening of the zoo and arival of the first 3 African elephants Conti, Vauka and Opeline
  • 10th september 1956: Inacuration of the association of "George von Opel - Freigehege für Tierforschung e.V."
  • 1957: The old elphant hous is beeing built
  • 1958: Arrival of two male and one female Persian fallow deer, the first animals of this species at any zoo
  • 1960: The first Persian fallow deer is born
  • 1961: Arival of the first giraffes
  • 1963: First giraf born
  • 28th August 1965: The first African Elephant is born (world wide the 2nd cub at any zoo). It is called "Afrika"
  • 15th April 1968: The second African Elephant is born (world wide the 4th cub at any zoo). It is called "Afrikano"
  • 1971: The founder Dr George von Opel dies with the age of 59
  • 1973: The first Persian fallow deer return to Iran (ther former persia) (sadly they still are extinct in the wild)
  • 1975: The first white zebra ever born in captivity is born
  • 1978: The riding arena opens
  • 1980: The geological garden opens
  • 1983: Opening of the museum for natural history, since 1999 its the zooschool
  • 1989: Gregor von Opel is the new chair man of the association
  • 1998: A masterplan is made with the help of the city
  • 1999: Opening of a play ground
  • 2000: Opening of a petting zoo
  • 2001 Opening of the wallaroo enclosure
  • 2002: Opening of the African area part 1 and an enclosure for moose
  • 2003: Opening of an enclosure for lynx

  • 2005: Opening of the enclosure for raccoons and European wild cats
  • 2006: Opening of the Savannah
  • 2007: Closing the "George von Opel - Freigehege für Tierforschung e.V.", instead the inaugaration of the "von Opel Hessische Zoostiftung". A zoo club starts as well for friends of the zoo
  • 2008: Opening of the outdoor terrariums, aviaries and an enclosure for leser pandas and bell deer
  • 2009: Opening of the bee hive
  • 2010: Opening of the Cheetah enclosure
  • 2013: Opening of a new elephant house, arrival of the bull Tamo
  • 2016: African penguins get a new enclosure

After paying the entrance fee we are havin on the left a large savannah with zebras, impalas and giraffes. On the right and there are several enclosures for domestic anomals like ponys, goats, bactrian and Arabian camels. Opposite the savannah is another entrance, please show your ticket once more. After this entrance we face the elephant house and the childrens zoo with a large playground and several animals to pet. At the reptiles we turn right to meet hyrax's as well as parots. Passing a pheasantry we now see the African elephant. Afterwards we see several ungulates like the moose, sika deer, red deer, alpaca and mouflon. In this area we also find the European mink, parakeets as well as owls. Now reached an area for small carnivores like European wild cat, raccoon, lynx and several fox species. Then passing a large aviary for storks and ibis's and the guanaco before we see other small carnivores the coati and geoffroy's cat, as well as the apella. At the giraffes we turn left to see the wallaroo and cheetahs, then its time to turn right. Here we meet the common eland, sarus cranes, bell deer, Persian fallowdeer, lesser panda, visayan spotted deer and te black buck. Oposite we find the ostrich and the bat-eared fox. Passing miniature pigs we see gibbons and flamingos. At the barbary macaques we turn right to see porcupines, mountain reed bucks and the nyala. On the right hand we find warty hogs, brown hyena and meerkats. Now we have reached the savannah once again and can head for the savannah.
